Efficiency Delivered: GCE’s Impact at Durham University

November 7, 2025 By ESAB Corporation

Our journey to success was marked by our commitment to understanding user needs and overcoming challenges. By implementing a standardized process and breaking down large projects into smaller, manageable parts, we transformed daunting tasks into efficient solutions. GCE has established itself as a limitless turnkey provider, leveraging deep industry knowledge and network to create innovative and effective solutions. This approach enhanced our clients’ project, unlocking new possibilities and enriching the scientific endeavors we support. (John Levett, External Sales Manager, GCE).

Durham University faced significant operational challenges due to non-standardized gas regulators and manifolds sourced from a wide range of manufacturers. This inconsistency led to difficulties in sourcing replacement parts and maintaining systems, creating inefficiencies and potential delays. Additionally, the presence of compressed gas cylinders inside buildings raised concerns around manual handling and fire risk. To address these issues, the university developed a comprehensive strategy to relocate cylinders to a central external store, piping gas safely to points of use.

Following a competitive tender process, Gasarc products were selected due to their quality, availability, and extensive product range. Working closely with the university and third-party collaborators involved in the design and specification of gas distribution systems, the GCE team ensured that all products were correctly specified for their intended use. The installation now serves approximately 236 lab systems, handling a wide variety of gases, including nitrogen, argon, helium, hydrogen, and speciality mixtures.
